Media
Here is a short explanation of the various types of media on this site or soon coming. We hope to add more types in the future. Contact us for more information if there is anything you don't understand about our products.
Artist Print Types
A Giclée is a special kind of print that is extremely high quality, highly detailed, and printed on canvas or high quality paper. The image is stretched and framed just like a normal painting, yet is far less expensive than the original.
An Aluminum print is a print that is printed on metal and then coated. It stands about two inches from the wall and does not require framing. The detail in a tin print is incomparable in any other media. The surface tends to be shiny. They are expensive to make, and thus cost more than Giclée prints.
A Traditional print on paper is the kind you are used to. This is much less expensive than the previous two types of artist prints. It is essentially a photograph authorized by the artist of their work, done on high quality acid free photographic paper. These also generally come in smaller sizes than other forms of print.
Original Paintings
Paintings come in many different media, on many different surfaces.
Oil Painting on Canvas. The most traditional is oil on canvas. Oil paints take longer to dry, but are a great media for artist detail and realism. The most traditional canvases are cotton and linen. However, some artists paint with oils directly onto other surfaces including canvas board, paper, raw wood, and many other materials.
Acrylic on Canvas. The next most traditional form, though more modern, is acrylic. Lyn Ott painted Baba almost exclusively in acrylic. Many other artists on this site use acrylic, though rarely so exclusively. Acrylic paint dries faster than oil and lends itself to bright vibrant colors. Acrylic paintings are also more durable and washable.
Mixed Media. Some artists mix media, including oil, acrylic, pastel, crayon, or nearly anything that creates color and vibrancy. Many of Ana von Hofmann's work is mixed media.
