My dear friend and mentor Sister Paula Mathew of The Spiritual Center generously gifted me with her carving tools in June 2016. Sister Paula has carved spiritually moving pieces throughout her ministry, for over 50 years as a Sister of St. Joseph. Having worked in wood since young adulthood, carving in wood has long held an attraction. But where to begin? I realized a drawing would be necessary. My mother painted abstracts much of her adult life, but painting and drawing were foreign to me. I first came into contact with Meher Baba during a spiritual retreat held by Mark Griffin, meditation master, of the Hardlight Center. I was immediately curious to learn more about Meher Baba and began reading about Him and reading His books. Once I began to draw, I realized much to my surprise it was fun and family and friends liked the results. Then I felt this strong pull to paint. Meher Baba was the subject of this first painting. As I paint, I meditate, chant and pray for guidance. My hope is that each portrait convey something of the spirit of Meher Baba to bless and uplift the viewer in some way for their benefit. Each time I paint I am blessed to feel in the presence of Him. |
