Barbara Shaw Cohen
For decades, Barbara Cohen’s evocative art has been on display only in multiple private collections and through the Consortium of the Arts. For the first time, she has now agreed to offer her paintings to a wider audience. Her love of art and color led to studies at the distinguished Chicago Art Institute and Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington. Her later work has been influenced by study with the noted abstract painter and author, Mindy Weisel. For years, Barbara's "day job" was at the Washington Post, where she applied her training in design and photography to the creation of publications, advertising layouts, and promotional materials.
Meher Baba’s inspiration and the beauty of his world have shaped her art even when the subject didn’t include his image. Utilizing acrylics, gouache, and pastel, her pieces are often playful and cheerful with bright, happy colors, marked by intriguing impressionistic and abstract forms that make her work unique. She wants her work to invite viewers into the picture--to be a place or evoke an environment where they would like to spend time and meld into that happy place. Beyond the emotional delight and spiritual impact of the paintings, serious collectors and art critics have admired her fascinating experiments in composition, tonality, dimensionality and compression of space.
Barbara is currently accepting commissions for paintings of Baba with your child or your pet. Send a favorite photo of your child or your pet, and Barbara will be in touch by email with an estimate.
